GEORG Horizontal Machining Center: the GEORG ultraturn MC

With the new horizontal machining center GEORG ultraturn MC for machining of complex workpieces of up to 250 tons workpiece weight and a maximum diameter of 4.000 mm, GEORG machine tool division has developed a technological highlight. This currently unique concept combines any possible mechanical machining technology and, for the first time, fully automatic workpiece measuring of large workpieces on one machine.

According to Dr.-Ing. Wieland Klein, Managing Director GEORG machine tool division, the ultraturn MC will set new standards with regard to profitability and productivity, because the reduction of downtimes for machining of large workpieces is much more verifiable compared machining of smaller components.

The machine has 3 hydrostatic guided linear axes. The milling spindles main drives ranging between 36 and 94 kW of maximum power and a torque of up to 7.000 Nm. GEORG also sets new standards regarding to safety at work and ease for use for machines of such overall size. This is achieved by the complete machine enclosure which also contains the pickup system for the attachments and the automatic tool changer.

For the ultraturn MC basic concept, GEORG reverts to well established components, e.g. headstock, machine bed or tailstock which are combined with the newly developed machining unit, the 2-point measuring system as well as comprehensive automation components. As with all other GEORG machine tools, we are able to correspond to almost any customer request. Dr. Klein: „We always find suitable solutions for our customers“.

The first order for the new GEORG Machine Tool flagship could already be signed last fall. This machine is made to handle workpieces up to a weight of maximum 180 t, workpiece diameter of 4.000 mm and maximum center distance of 10.000 mm. It is also equipped with an automatic tool and aggregate changing unit for 8 attachments, complete machine enclosure and the 2-point measuring system, to mention only a few features.

Machining Centers for a maximum workpiece weight of up to 15 t have been established on the market for many years. With the ultra turn MC, GEORG approaches a machining range, which has not been realized so far related to workpiece size and weight, accuracies and cutting forces combined with the automatic workpiece measuring unit.

Customers for the new GEORG machine can be found within the field of turbine and generator manufacturers, crankshaft and driving shaft producers as well as forges, large gear manufacturers and the general machine building industry.
