GEORG delivers roll grinder to Volkswagens Gigafactory in Salzgitter

The first Volkswagen Group-owned battery cell factory is being built in Salzgitter. From 2025, standardized cells will roll off the production line there and the cell factory will produce an annual capacity of 40 GWh - enough for around 500,000 electric vehicles.

The Salzgitter site is set to become the focal point for the company's expansion of electromobility. In particular, the production of highly complex battery cells will take place in the gigafactory, underlining the Volkswagen Group's long-term strategy.

To this end, Volkswagen founded PowerCo SE in summer 2022, in which the Group bundles its global battery business. The company will manage the development of international factory operations from Salzgitter.

In addition to Salzgitter, further gigafactories are being built in Valencia, Spain and St. Thomas, Kanada.

VW will operate its own roll workshop in Salzgitter so that the rolls for the calendering systems can be reconditioned at regular intervals.

To ensure that its calendering rolls remain in perfect condition and have a long service life, Volkswagen AG ordered a high-end roll grinder typ GEORG ultragrind SG 2 in foundation-free GEORG ultrablock design as the key machine for the roll shop.

The machine will be equipped with the unique GEORG smartcontrol CNC system and will also be equipped with a comprehensive package of the latest roll testing technology.

We are proud to be the partner for Volkswagen's global battery business.

IGUS trade press day at GEORG

To ensure the high quality of our machines, we manufacture in our in-house mechanical production facilities in Kreuztal, Germany, and Roanoke, USA.

We apply the same high-quality standards to our suppliers — for example, to the energy chains from igus GmbH. Last week, igus visited our headquarters in Kreuztal as part of a trade press workshop attended by many journalists. The industry experts had the opportunity to gain an in-depth impression of our coil processing lines, roll grinding machines, and lean production. We are very grateful to have igus as a reliable partner providing top-quality products by our side.
